NEWS: Calvin and Linda arrive at Baxter

Excerpts of a email letter received from Calvin Henry on Sunday, July 5.

Just want all to know that we arrived yesterday without any major problems. Only 20 on the Continental flight, including us. Our two Baxter friends, Armando Pacheco and Rene Rosa, could not get into the airport to pick us up, but parked across the street and sent a message through one of the airport baggage handlers, who found us and accompanied us and our luggage to the street. We had to cross the street in the middle of a protest march which was winding down....We had to take a roundabout route to get away from the congestion of the manifestations. We came through the neighborhoods above Baxter....

On campus all is well, in spite of the tensions. We all went to church at the La Vega church next to campus and it was an uplifting service. I am sure that there are sentiments on both sides in the congregation, but the leaders have asked the church not to let politics into their relationship with the Lord and one another, and to pray for peace. Carlos Estrada, a native Honduran grad from about 20 years ago, now preaching in Chicago, was in country to visit family and preached a great impromptu lesson based on Phil. 3, 2 Cor. 11, and Rom. 8. Basically: we are to be joyful in all situations. Paul was, and he assures us nothing can separate us from the love of Christ....[S]tudents of different nationalities took part in the Lordīs supper, and yours truly led a prayer for peace. It was a great demonstration of love and unity in Christ.

I write from the apartment of Oscar Lopez and Yudiela, fourth year students from El Salvador. We hope to get our own laptops set up tomorrow for use on the Baxter internet. Our classes start tomorrow. All the students are on campus....

Pray for Honduras. The population is very divided as to loyalties. May the Lord intervene to maintain peace. We really donīt fear for our safety. We are staying on campus and have no reason to leave.

That is what is going on in our dull and uneventful lives.

Peace.
Calvin
